Hong Kong Society of Medical Genetics was formed in August 1986 and registered as a non-profit making scientific organization under the Registry of Societies in Hong Kong. The Society's aims are to promote the interest and knowledge in medical genetics in Hong Kong and to organize scientific and social meetings to facilitate interchange of ideas in medical genetics. There are about 130 registered members from different disciplines such as the universities, government units, Hospital Authority service units and other scientific professions. There are two main types of membership, Ordinary member and Associate member. Ordinary Members are medical practitioners, scientists or technologists with continuous interest in medical genetics, publications, conferences etc. Associate members are medical practitioners, scientists or technologists interested in medical genetics but not otherwise qualified as Ordinary Members. With diversifying function and activities, the Society adopted a new registration format as a limited company called the Hong Kong Society of Medical Genetics Company Limited in July 1998. This would facilitate the accounting and organization of activities and collaborations with related organizations. Now the Society is going to adopt the original name as the "Hong Kong Society of Medical Genetics"
